Cot Beds

Cot Beds – Long-Lasting Sleep Spaces from 6 Months to 5 Years

Shop our range of cot beds – convertible sleep spaces that grow with your child from their first cot stage through to a toddler bed, typically lasting from 6 months to 4–5 years. A cot bed is one of the best-value nursery investments you can make, eliminating the need to buy a separate toddler bed when your child outgrows a standard cot. Free UK delivery available.

Cot Bed vs Standard Cot – Which Should You Choose?

  • Cot bed – Larger than a standard cot (typically 70cm x 140cm mattress). Converts to a toddler bed by removing one or both sides. Suitable from approximately 6 months to 4–5 years. Better long-term value but takes up more floor space.
  • Standard cot – Smaller (typically 60cm x 120cm mattress). Suitable from approximately 6 months to 2–3 years. More compact – better for smaller nurseries. Requires a separate toddler bed when your child outgrows it.
  • Our verdict – If you have the space, a cot bed offers significantly better long-term value. If your nursery is small, a standard cot is the more practical choice.

How to Choose the Right Cot Bed

  • Mattress size – Most cot beds use a 70cm x 140cm mattress. Always use a firm, flat mattress that fits snugly with no gaps at the sides – a key Lullaby Trust safe sleep requirement.
  • Adjustable base height – Look for a cot bed with multiple base height positions. Start with the highest position for easy access to a newborn, then lower it as your baby becomes more mobile.
  • Teething rails – Protective rails on the top of the cot sides prevent damage from teething babies and protect the finish.
  • Conversion kit – Check whether the toddler bed conversion kit is included or sold separately.
  • Safety certification – Look for BS EN 1130 certification for cot beds.

Why Choose Our Cot Beds?

  • Grows from cot to toddler bed – Suitable from 6 months to 4–5 years
  • Adjustable base height – Multiple positions for easy access and safety as baby grows
  • Teething rails – Protects the cot and your baby's gums
  • Safety certified – Meets BS EN 1130 and current UK safety standards
  • Stylish designs – Classic white, natural wood, and contemporary finishes

Frequently Asked Questions

A cot bed is suitable from approximately 6 months, when your baby has sufficient head and neck control to sleep safely in a larger sleep space. Before 6 months, a Moses basket or bedside crib is recommended, keeping your baby close to you in line with Lullaby Trust safe sleep guidelines (same room for the first 6 months). When transitioning to a cot bed, always use a firm, flat mattress that fits snugly with no gaps, place baby on their back, and keep the cot free from pillows, duvets, and loose bedding.

A cot bed typically lasts from approximately 6 months to 4–5 years. In the cot configuration (with sides), it's suitable until your child reaches the manufacturer's maximum weight limit or begins climbing out – usually around 2–3 years. At this point, you remove one or both sides to convert it to a toddler bed, which your child can use until they're ready for a junior or single bed – typically around 4–5 years. This makes a cot bed significantly better value than a standard cot, which typically lasts only to 2–3 years.

Most cot beds use a standard 70cm x 140cm mattress. Always measure your specific cot bed before purchasing, as sizes can vary slightly between brands. The Lullaby Trust recommends using a firm, flat mattress that fits snugly in the cot with no gaps at the sides – a gap of more than 4cm between the mattress and the cot sides is a safety risk. Choose a mattress with a breathable, waterproof cover that can be wiped clean. Replace the mattress if it's second-hand, visibly worn, or has been used by a previous child.
