Which Baby Blanket Do You Need? A Quick Guide

Different blankets serve different purposes – here's how to choose the right one:

  • Muslin swaddle blankets – Lightweight, breathable, and stretchy. Ideal for swaddling newborns, as a nursing cover, a pram shade, or a burp cloth. The most versatile baby blanket you can own. Best for: birth to 6 months.
  • Cellular blankets – Open-weave cotton construction that allows airflow while maintaining warmth. The traditional choice for cot use – if a cellular blanket accidentally covers a baby's face, air can still pass through. Best for: pram use and layering in the cot (supervised).
  • Fleece blankets – Soft, warm, and cosy. Ideal for colder months, outdoor outings, and toddler cuddles. Not suitable for use in a cot during sleep. Best for: pram, car seat (outside the harness), and play.
  • Cotton knit blankets – Stylish and breathable. Great for layering and gifting. Best for: supervised use, tummy time, and decorative nursery use.
  • Important safe sleep note – The Lullaby Trust advises against using loose blankets in a cot for babies under 12 months. For sleep, use a well-fitting baby sleeping bag instead. Blankets are safe for supervised use during tummy time, pram outings, and cuddles.

Frequently Asked Questions

The safest option for newborn sleep is a well-fitting baby sleeping bag rather than a loose blanket. The Lullaby Trust advises against using loose blankets in a cot for babies under 12 months, as they can cover a baby's face and pose a suffocation risk. If you do use a blanket in the cot, a cellular (open-weave) blanket is the safest choice – its open weave allows air to pass through if it accidentally covers your baby's face. Always tuck it in securely at the sides and foot of the mattress, and ensure it reaches no higher than your baby's shoulders. For supervised use during tummy time, pram outings, and cuddles, any soft, breathable blanket is suitable.

Muslin blankets are made from loosely woven cotton gauze that is lightweight, breathable, and gets softer with every wash. They are incredibly versatile – ideal for swaddling newborns, as a nursing cover, a pram shade, or a burp cloth. Cellular blankets have a distinctive open-weave (honeycomb) structure that allows airflow while maintaining warmth, making them the traditional choice for cot use. Both are breathable and suitable for babies, but muslin is more versatile for everyday use while cellular is the classic choice for layering in the pram or cot.

No – you should never put a blanket underneath or behind your baby in a car seat, as this can affect the fit of the harness and reduce its effectiveness in a crash. The harness must sit directly against your baby's body with no padding between them and the straps. If your baby is cold in the car seat, dress them in thin layers and place a blanket loosely over the top of the harness (not tucked in). Remove thick coats and snowsuits before placing your baby in the car seat for the same reason – bulky clothing compresses in a crash and creates slack in the harness.
