Stairgates – Essential Baby Safety for Stairs, Doorways & Rooms
Shop our range of stairgates – one of the most important baby safety purchases you'll make as your baby becomes mobile. A stairgate prevents access to stairs, kitchens, and other hazardous areas, giving you peace of mind as your baby starts crawling and walking. Free UK delivery available. All gates meet current UK and European safety standards.
Types of Stairgate
- Pressure-fit stairgates – Held in place by pressure against the door frame or wall. No drilling required. Easy to install and remove. Suitable for doorways and room dividers, but not recommended for the top of stairs where a pressure-fit gate could be pushed out by a falling child.
- Screw-fit (wall-mounted) stairgates – Fixed to the wall with screws for a permanent, secure installation. Required at the top of stairs and recommended for any high-risk location. More secure than pressure-fit but requires drilling.
- Retractable stairgates – Roll up when not in use, making them ideal for doorways where you need frequent access. Available in pressure-fit and screw-fit versions.
Top of Stairs vs Bottom of Stairs
Always use a screw-fit gate at the top of stairs. A pressure-fit gate at the top of stairs is a serious safety risk – if a child falls against it, the gate can be pushed out of position. At the bottom of stairs, a pressure-fit gate is acceptable. Check the gate's packaging or product description to confirm whether it is approved for top-of-stairs use.
How to Choose the Right Stairgate
- Opening width – Measure your opening carefully. Most stairgates fit openings from approximately 60–90cm, with extension bars available for wider openings.
- One-hand operation – Look for a gate that can be opened with one hand – essential when you're carrying a baby.
- Auto-close – A gate that closes automatically behind you is a useful safety feature.
- Walk-through design – A gate with a walk-through opening (rather than one you have to step over) is safer and more practical for daily use.

Frequently Asked Questions
A pressure-fit stairgate is held in place by pressure against the door frame or wall – no drilling required. It's easy to install and remove, making it ideal for doorways and room dividers. However, pressure-fit gates must never be used at the top of stairs, as a falling child could push the gate out of position. A screw-fit (wall-mounted) stairgate is fixed to the wall with screws for a permanent, secure installation. It's required at the top of stairs and recommended for any high-risk location. Always check the gate's packaging to confirm whether it is approved for top-of-stairs use.
Install stairgates before your baby starts crawling – typically from around 6–8 months. Babies can become mobile surprisingly quickly, and it's much easier to install gates before you need them than to rush the installation when your baby is already on the move. At minimum, install a screw-fit gate at the top of stairs and a pressure-fit or screw-fit gate at the bottom. Also consider gates for the kitchen, bathroom, and any other rooms with hazards.
Measure the width of your opening carefully before purchasing. Most standard stairgates fit openings from approximately 60–90cm. If your opening is wider, look for a gate that includes extension bars, or purchase extension bars separately. Always measure at the narrowest point of the opening (usually where the gate's pressure pads or wall cups will sit) and check the gate's minimum and maximum width range before purchasing. For unusually wide openings (over 100cm), look for a specialist wide-opening gate.
