Start with a firm, flat mattress and a snugly fitting sheet made for your baby's sleep space. For warmth, use an appropriately sized sleeping bag or a lightweight blanket following current safer-sleep guidance. Keep pillows, duvets, cot bumpers, soft toys and other loose items out of the sleep space. Check the mattress and bedding manufacturers' instructions.
Choose a sleeping bag using its manufacturer's size, tog and room-temperature guidance, together with the clothing your baby is wearing. There is no single tog suitable for every room or season. Check your baby for signs of overheating and do not add a loose blanket over a sleeping bag unless the manufacturer expressly advises it.
