How to Use a Nursing Pillow Correctly

A nursing pillow is only effective when positioned correctly. Here's how to get the most from yours:

  • Position around your waist – The pillow should sit firmly against your body at waist height, not on your lap. This brings baby up to breast height rather than you leaning down to baby – which is the most common cause of back and shoulder pain during feeds.
  • Use the strap – If your pillow has an adjustable strap, fasten it snugly so the pillow doesn't slip during the feed.
  • Baby's tummy to your tummy – For breastfeeding, baby should be chest-to-chest with you, with their head at breast level and their body supported along the pillow.
  • Don't use as an unsupervised sleep surface – Nursing pillows are not designed for unsupervised infant sleep. Always move baby to a safe, flat sleep surface after feeding.
  • Tummy time support – As baby grows, nursing pillows make excellent tummy time props, helping to strengthen neck and shoulder muscles.

Why Choose Our Nursing Pillows?

  • Ergonomic U-shaped design – Wraps around your waist to bring baby to the ideal feeding height
  • Back & arm support – Reduces strain during long feeds, protecting your posture
  • Firm cushioning – Supportive enough to hold baby securely without sagging
  • Removable washable covers – Easy to keep clean for everyday use
  • Versatile use – Doubles as tummy time support as your little one grows
  • Soft hypoallergenic materials – Gentle against newborn skin
  • Promotes proper latch – Correct positioning supports a comfortable, effective latch

Frequently Asked Questions

You don't strictly need one, but most breastfeeding mothers find a nursing pillow makes a significant difference – particularly in the early weeks when you're feeding 8–12 times a day. The key benefit is positioning: a nursing pillow brings your baby up to breast height so you don't have to hunch forward or hold your baby's weight with your arms throughout the feed. This reduces back, shoulder, and wrist strain considerably. It also helps maintain a consistent feeding position, which supports a good latch. Many mothers find they use their nursing pillow for every feed for the first 3–4 months.

Yes – nursing pillows work equally well for bottle feeding. The same positioning benefits apply: the pillow brings your baby to a comfortable height so you're not hunching or holding all of baby's weight in your arms. This is particularly useful during longer feeds or when you're recovering from a C-section or birth. As your baby grows, the nursing pillow also makes a useful prop for supported sitting practice and tummy time.

No – nursing pillows are not designed or certified as safe sleep surfaces and should never be used for unsupervised infant sleep. The curved, soft surface does not provide the firm, flat sleeping environment recommended by the Lullaby Trust, and the raised sides can pose a suffocation risk if a baby rolls or slumps. Always move your baby to a firm, flat, safe sleep surface (cot, Moses basket, or crib) after feeding. Never leave a baby unattended on a nursing pillow, even briefly.
