When buying a mattress we recommend you don't buy a second hand mattress as there's a risk of transferring bacteria from one baby to another. Instead, buy one brand new.

Even if your baby will be sleeping in a crib or cot that's secondhand, the mattress needs to be clean, firm and ideally brand new to benefit their health.

Is this moses mattress safe?

It is important that the mattress is firm, entirely flat, and waterproof, with no soft or cushioned areas, particularly around baby’s head. Soft mattresses are known to increase the risk of SIDS. Soft mattresses make it harder for babies to lose body heat, which can cause them to become too hot. The babies head should not sink more than a few mm's when their head is placed on the mattress, the foam mattress should be firm enough to ensure this.
