Pod and traditional wicker Moses baskets can look quite different, but appearance alone does not tell you how a product is designed to be used. The right choice depends on the specific basket’s instructions, the space you have at home and the practical details that matter to your family.
What do “pod” and “wicker” mean?
“Pod” often describes a rounded or cocoon-like shape, while “wicker” describes a woven material or style. Product naming is not standardised across every brand, so check the materials, construction and intended use listed for each individual product rather than relying on the category name.
Compare the features, not just the look
Shape and internal space
Look at the usable internal dimensions and the size of the mattress each basket takes. A wider-looking exterior does not necessarily mean a larger sleep surface. Check that the supplied or approved mattress fits the basket correctly.

If you want to move the basket around your home, read the instructions about handles and carrying. Do not carry a baby in a basket unless that specific product is designed and approved for carrying an occupied basket. Choose a safe, stable placement and follow the product guidance.
Care and longevity
Compare removable, washable components, replacement parts and the stated age, weight and developmental limits. These can vary between models, even when the baskets share a similar style.
What about a crib or cot?
A bedside crib or cot is a different type of sleep product with its own design, dimensions and use limits. Compare the specific instructions, mattress fit, room layout and expected transition point. Do not use a basket, crib, cot or accessory outside its stated purpose or approved configuration.
Safe-sleep essentials whichever style you choose
Follow current advice from The Lullaby Trust and your midwife or health visitor. In general, place your baby on their back, use a firm, flat mattress that fits correctly and keep the sleep space clear of pillows, duvets, toys, nests, bumpers and loose items. Follow the exact product instructions and stop use when any stated limit is reached.

Choose the model whose instructions, dimensions, mattress fit, placement and care requirements work best for your home. If a product does not clearly state whether it is suitable for your intended use, or what mattress and accessories are compatible, ask the manufacturer or retailer before buying.
