When preparing a pod Moses basket for a newborn, the exact product instructions matter. Styles and construction can differ, so do not assume that safety limits, mattress choices or stands are interchangeable between baskets. Use this checklist alongside the manufacturer’s guidance and current advice from trusted baby-safety organisations.
Check that the basket is intended for baby sleep
Read the product details and instructions to confirm its intended use. If the instructions do not clearly explain how it should be used for sleep, ask the manufacturer or retailer before placing your baby in it. Use only the components approved for that specific basket.
Use the correct mattress
Use the mattress supplied with the basket or a replacement specifically approved by its manufacturer. It should be firm, flat and fit the base properly, with no gaps or raised edges. Do not add a topper, cushion, extra padding or a second mattress.
Prepare a clear sleep space
For sleep, place your baby on their back and keep the space clear of pillows, duvets, loose blankets, toys, nests, bumpers and positioners. Keep your baby’s head uncovered and follow current safe-sleep guidance on appropriate bedding and room temperature. Consult The Lullaby Trust and your midwife or health visitor for current advice.
Choose a safe location
Set the basket down only where the manufacturer permits. Use a stable, level surface or a stand specifically approved for that basket, assembled as instructed. Keep it away from edges, stairs, heaters, cords, blinds and other hazards. Do not place it on a sofa, adult bed, table or other raised surface unless the product instructions explicitly allow that setup.
Understand handles and movement
Handles are not proof that a basket is designed to be carried with a baby inside. Follow the manufacturer’s carrying instructions exactly, and do not lift or move the basket with your baby in it unless the product is specifically designed and approved for that purpose. Never carry it by a single handle.
Check limits and developmental milestones
Follow all age, weight and developmental limits in the product instructions. Stop using the basket when any limit is reached, or when the manufacturer says your baby’s development makes it unsuitable. Prepare a cot or other appropriate sleep space before your baby reaches that point.
Inspect it regularly
Before use, check the basket, base, handles, mattress and any stand for damage, looseness, instability or wear. Do not use a damaged or modified product. Keep instructions available so anyone caring for your baby can follow the same setup and use limits.
