Choosing bedding for a new baby is less about filling the cot and more about creating a simple, comfortable and safe sleep space. Newborn bedding should be soft against the skin, easy to wash and correctly sized for the mattress or basket. This guide covers the essentials for those first months.
What does a newborn actually need?
For sleep, the essentials are a firm, flat mattress, a well-fitted waterproof mattress protector, a fitted sheet and suitable layers for the room temperature. You do not need pillows, duvets, cot bumpers, sleep positioners or loose decorative items in the sleep space.
Choose the right fitted sheet
A fitted sheet should be made for the exact mattress size, with elastic that keeps it secure around the corners. Avoid sheets that are too loose or leave gaps. Breathable cotton or cotton-rich fabrics are practical choices because they are comfortable, washable and suitable for everyday use.
How many sheets do you need?
Two or three fitted sheets can be a useful starting point, giving you a clean spare while another is in the wash. If you use a Moses basket or bedside crib as well as a cot, buy sheets for each mattress size rather than assuming one size will fit all.
Mattress protectors and waterproof layers
A waterproof protector can help keep the mattress clean, but it must fit securely and remain smooth and flat. Choose a protector designed for the mattress dimensions and check that it does not make the surface feel uneven. Replace any layer that is torn, loose or no longer fits correctly.
Blankets, sleeping bags and room temperature
Use lightweight layers that can be adjusted to the room temperature. If you use a baby sleeping bag, choose the correct size and tog rating for your room, and follow the manufacturer's guidance. If you use a blanket, keep it firmly tucked below shoulder level and make sure your baby's head and face remain uncovered.
Safe-sleep essentials
Place your baby on their back to sleep, with their feet near the bottom of the cot or basket. Keep the sleep space clear of pillows, duvets, cot bumpers, toys, nests and loose items. Keep your baby's sleep space in your room for the first six months where possible, and follow current advice from The Lullaby Trust, your midwife or health visitor.
Make washing easy
Newborn bedding needs regular washing, so check the care label before buying. Look for removable covers, colourfast fabrics and sheets that can be washed at a practical temperature. Keep a spare fitted sheet and protector ready for quick changes during the night.
Simple is best
The best newborn bedding is correctly fitted, easy to wash and suitable for a clear, flat sleep space. Start with the essentials, check every item against your mattress size and add style through colours and patterns rather than extra loose layers.
