Baby Safety Fireguard Buying Guide: Choosing the Right Fit

A fireguard can help create a barrier between children and a working fireplace, stove or other heat source. Because fireguard designs and heating appliances vary, the right choice depends on the exact appliance, opening and manufacturer’s instructions. Measure carefully and check suitability before buying.

Identify the heat source first

List the appliance or area you need to protect, such as an open fireplace, stove or hearth. Check the fireguard manufacturer’s product information for the types of heat source and installation locations it is designed for. Do not assume a general-purpose barrier is suitable for every appliance.

Measure the hearth and opening

Measure the width and depth of the area that needs covering, including any projections, corners or uneven surfaces. Compare your measurements with the fireguard’s stated coverage and clearance requirements. If it uses panels or extensions, confirm that they are approved for that exact model and arrangement.

Choose the right fixing method

Some fireguards attach to a wall or surrounding structure, while others are freestanding or configured around a hearth. Follow the product instructions for mounting, anchoring and the surfaces it can be fitted to. Do not improvise fixings or rely on a barrier that is not designed for your setup.

Check heat clearance and materials

Read the appliance and fireguard instructions for required clearances, temperature limits and materials. Keep the barrier positioned as directed, and do not allow it to touch the fire, stove, hot glass or other heated surfaces unless the manufacturer explicitly says that arrangement is suitable. If you cannot confirm safe clearances, ask the appliance or fireguard manufacturer before use.

Access and everyday use

Consider how adults will access the fireplace for lighting, cleaning or maintenance. If the fireguard has a gate or door, check that it closes and latches as instructed. Keep children away while the appliance is in use and while surfaces remain hot, even when a barrier is fitted.

Installation and maintenance checklist

  • Use the complete fireguard system and all required parts.
  • Install it exactly as the manufacturer directs.
  • Check fixings, joints and panels regularly for looseness or damage.
  • Keep furniture, toys and climbable objects away from the barrier.
  • Do not hang items on the guard or use it for a purpose it was not designed for.
  • Follow appliance guidance for operation, servicing and cooling.

A fireguard is not a substitute for supervision

Stay with children around fires, stoves and hot surfaces. A fireguard is one layer of home safety, not a guarantee that a child cannot reach a hazard or that a hot appliance is safe to touch.

Before you buy

Confirm the fireguard is suitable for your heat source, covers the full area, fits your installation space and provides the access you need. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for mounting, positioning and clearance, and contact the manufacturer if any part of your setup is unclear.
